Abhay Shirodkar was elected as the new Darpanch while Manorama Govekar as his Deputy in the nine-member Siolim-Marna village panchayat on Friday.
The elections were necessitated because both the earlier sarpanch and the deputy sarpanch had resigned from their posts around a week back.
Shirodkar who bagged six votes defeated panchayat member William Fernandes who also contested for the post of the sarpanch.
At the special meeting held in the panchayat office, two applications were received for the post of the sarpanch while only one person applied for the post of deputy sarpanch.
Panchayat members Sandesh Hadfadkar and Amit Morajkar proposed and seconded respectively the name of Abhay Shirodkar for the post of sarpanch while Sylvester De Araujo proposed William Fernandes as sarpanch and Sharmila Vernekar seconded him.
In the ensuing election Shirodkar was supported by six panchayat members while Fernandes was backed by three members.
