Following a recent break-in at the Mapusa Municipal Market, where thieves targeted six shops, the Mapusa Municipal Council has moved to fast-track the installation of CCTV surveillance cameras across the market premises.
The civic body has written to the authorities concerned, urging that the process be expedited so that the cameras can be installed at the earliest.
The proposal for CCTV installation had already been submitted to the government earlier, but officials say the latest incident has added urgency to the plan.
MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal said the council is actively pursuing the project, which has been pending for some time.
“We have proposed the installation of around 19 CCTV cameras in the market area, with an estimated cost of Rs 1.18 crore,” she said.
According to Mishal, the project is expected to be funded through the MPLAD scheme, with a proposal already submitted to North Goa MP Shripad Naik for consideration.
The installation of surveillance cameras has long been a demand of the trading community, which has repeatedly raised concerns over security in the busy market area.
Local police have also supported the move, stressing the need for enhanced monitoring to deter theft and other criminal activities.
In addition to the market, the police have recommended the installation of CCTV cameras at key entry and exit points of Mapusa town.
Officials believe that such a network would help track the movement of suspects and improve overall law enforcement response.
The recent theft has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the market, one of North Goa’s busiest commercial hubs, prompting authorities to push for quicker implementation of the long-pending surveillance project.
