PANAJI

Day one of the 10-month long exercise across the State for owners of all vehicles to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) saw a lackluster response from the residents of Panaji, with only around 30 residents visiting the RTO office in Paryatan Bhavan, Patto, to initiate the process to get the new number plates fixed.

A visit to the Panaji RTO office nearing evening saw not a single person in the queue at the Counter Number 8 designated to tend to vehicle owners who came to inquire about the process and get started.

The RTO official in-charge of the counter, however, said that around 30 people had come throughout the day.

The first part of the process for replacing the vehicle’s current number plate with the HSRP involves visiting the RTO office at Paryatan Bhavan. The owner is required to pay a small amount depending on the type of vehicle. A form will then be filled online with the owner’s and vehicle’s details, the official explained.

Then, the owner will be given a date and time, approximately three days, following the first visit to the RTO. Owners will then be required to go to the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) offices in Porvorim where the plate will be fitted for them, the official added.

The State government has instructed owners of all vehicles registered prior to April 1 to fit HSRP to their vehicles. In a public notice in September, the Director of Transport Rajan Satardekar stated that the State government had selected M/s Real Mazon India Limited agency to supply HSRP, to be fitted on the vehicles. Goa is one of the seven states which has still not complied with court’s directives to fit HSRP.

According to the month-wise schedule, vehicles from all series from 0001 to1000 will be covered in October, followed by all series from 1001 to 2000 (Nov 2019), 2001 to 3000 (Dec 2019), 3001 to 4000 (Jan 2020), 4001 to 5000 (Feb 2020), 5001 to 6000 (March 2020), 6001 to 7000 (April 2020), 7001 to 8000 (May 2020), 8001 to 9000 (June 2020) and 9001 to 9999 (July 2020). Vehicles which have missed doing so in the allotted time will be fitted with HSRP in August 2020.
