The Margao railway station footbridge was finally thrown open for passengers and people alike on Sunday.
Konkan Railway officials opened the footbridge by deploying staff to subject the people to thermal scanning.
The opening of the footbridge comes against the backdrop of complaints lodged by motorcycle and rickshaw pilots, besides small businessmen on the Aquem side of the Margao railway station. They said their livelihoods was at stake due to the closure of the footbridge.
The footbridge was closed for passengers as per an order of the District Collector, South, leaving the pilots and small businessmen in the lurch.
After the pilots and businessmen raised the issue last week, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat had a meeting with the District Collector wherein the Konkan Railway was directed to open the footbridge by implementing the SOP in place to scan passengers entering the railway station.
The pilots and small businessmen had maintained that they had suffered the brunt of the lockdowns and the closure of train services during the last eight months and wanted the footbridge opened given that some trains have resumed services again.
