Smelly slum: dwellers angry at politicians

Slum dwellers near Ambabai Temple at Mangor, Vasco, have hit out at politicians for garbage and overflowing sewage in the area.rnThey accused the politicians of begging for votes during elections, only to forget them and ignore their difficulties after coming to power.

Pointing to the overflowing sewerage water, the slum dwellers said chambers have been overflowing since the last one week and a complaint to the sewerage department at Baina has fallen on deaf ears.
“Life for the last one week has been miserable as stink of the overflowing sewerage water has filled our homes. A complaint to the PWD (sewerage) has gone unheard. We are not animals, we are also human beings. Our children suffer due to the stink and we cannot even have our meals,” Sabowa Harijan told The Goan.
“Politicians should not put the common man to hardship because of their indifference. We are targeted for no fault of ours,” said Harijan.
Another resident, Jaitun Gadwal, said political supporters during their meetings threaten them that their schemes will be discontinued if they do not attend meetings of politicians.
“Everyone is shouting about Swachh Bharat, but who is bothered about overflowing sewerage and garbage that affects the health of the people,” questioned Gadwal.
“We have been running from the municipal council to the PWD office with a request to clean the area, but there is no one to hear our voice. Is this because we are poor,” asked Gadwal.
