Social media post on Navelim parish priest triggers uproar

MARGAO
A social media post directed at the Parish Priest of Navelim triggered resentment and uproar in Navelim on Thursday, with angry Parishioners demanding action against the culprits involved in uploading the post.

Navelim Parish Priest, Fr Gabriel Coutinho, however, said that such posts will not stop him from propagating the Word of God in different situations, saying Lord Jesus was prophetic and as far as possible, we have to be prophetic.

A social media post titled “The new revolution. Revolutionary Goans will not allow any priest to preach politics in Goa and special message to Parish Priest of Navelim, stop your political preaching” with the photo and name of Revolutionary Goans Navelim candidate Bento Da Silva saw agitated parishioners holding a meeting at the Church to condemn the author of the post and to demand action.

Bento Da Silva, who was also present, explained to the Parishioners and the Parish Priest Fr Gabriel Coutinho that some miscreants have deliberately and intentionally uploaded the social post in his name to defame him and to cause division in the Church and divide the people of Navelim.

In fact, he informed the Parish Priest and the Parishioners that he has already filed a written complaint with the Margao police station as well as the cybercrime police station to nab the miscreants involved in creating and uploading the social post. “Don’t get misguided by the post, which is an attempt to defame our religion and to divide the people of Navelim,” Bento said.

Fr Gabriel told the media that Bento has denied his hand in uploading the post directed at him. He said the Parishioners have demanded that the investigating agency find out the culprits involved in uploading the post with the help of technology. “It is apparent that the  mind of the culprit, who has uploaded the post, is not clear. It is an attempt to divide the Catholic,” he said.

Meanwhile, Margao police has said a non-cognizable offence has been registered against unknown persons on a complaint filed by Bento Da Silva.
