Anjuna Police have registered a case against unknown persons for allegedly posting derogatory and objectionable comments about Shree Swami Samarth on social media, following a complaint by the founder of the Shree Swami Samarth Parivar Math in Siolim.
Police said the case has been registered under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of devotees.
The complaint was filed by Nilesh Vernekar, founder of the Shree Swami Samarth Parivar Math, Siolim. He alleged that unidentified persons using multiple Facebook accounts posted objectionable comments on the Facebook page “Amche Goa” regarding Shree Swami Samarth.
Vernekar claimed that the posts were intended to insult religious beliefs and outrage the sentiments of devotees and other citizens. A day before the FIR was registered, Vernekar, along with several devotees of the Math, had gathered outside Anjuna Police Station and submitted a written complaint seeking strict action against those responsible.
Police are now trying to identify the persons behind the Facebook accounts from which the alleged comments were posted. Further investigation is underway.
