CANACONA
Canacona social worker Shubham Komarpant petitioned the Water Resources Department to conduct dredging to increase the storage capacity of Chapolim Dam with an aim to fight water scarcity in future.
Komarpant on Tuesday handed over a memorandum to the Assistant Engineer, WRD, Canacona Dayanand Nagvekar to submit a proposal to the government to dredge the Chapoli dam as a measure to tide over the water scarcity in-case of less rains in future.
The AE has assured to start the process by putting up the issue with the government with immediate effect.
Incidentally Chapoli dam continues to totter at around 71% of its reservoir capacity at around 35.29 RL (Reduced Level) amidst the drought of seasonal rainfall, which is pegged at just around 1289.4 mm on Tuesday evening.
Canacona’s Lifeline (Chapoli dam) covers a total of 6.83 square kilometres and its main source of water is a natural stream/Nallah originating in the nearby Chapoli hills, besides the rainwater flowing within the valley extending westward from the Western Ghat Foothills (Sahyadri Mountains).
At its deepest point, the 760-mtr long dam has a height of 25.50 meters with a storage capacity of 876.58 hamt. Full reservoir level is 38.25 meters, and Chapoli dam spillage gets activated when water level reaches to 38.875 meters.
