In fact, while GSUDA has already issued work order for the bio-remediation of the Vasco waste dump yard, the agency is waiting for the nod from the MMC whether to go ahead with the project or not. “We have already told the Civic body some few days back to make available the landfill site for the disposal of the waste generated during bio-remediation. We have been invited for the MMC sub-committee meeting on Sonsodo scheduled on Tuesday. Let us wait and see what transpires at the meeting,” a GSUDA official told The Goan.
Incidentally, while GSUDA has issued the work order for the contractor to start bio-remediation of the Vasco dump yard, work order for the Sonsodo dumping site could not be issued as the Agency has called the contractor for negotiations since the amount quoted has been found on a higher side. “We want to negotiate with the contractor before sending the file to the Works Advisory Committee for approval,” the official said.
While the sub-committee headed by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat not officially abandoned the bio-remediation project, many an eyebrows have been raised in the city circles after Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco and MMC Chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai inspected the Saligao waste dumping site, where the remediation work is being carried out by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC). “We will place our observations before the sub-committee at its meeting scheduled on Tuesday. Let me make it very clear that I am totally opposed to the capping of the Sonsodo site,” sub-committee member and Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco said.
He pointed out that the Saligao waste dump yard was inspected by him and the MMC chairperson but not to facilitate capping of Sonsodo, but to ensure that the Sonsodo mess is cleared at the earliest. “I am all for the bio-remediation of the Sonsodo waste dumping site. The High Powered Coordination Committee (HPCC) headed by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had also given the go-ahead signal for bio-remediation,” he added.
