Will there be a turnaround at the Sonsodo waste dumping site in the New Year with the High Court setting timelines to the authorities including the Margao Municipal Council?
Pose the question to Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and the former Chief Minister exudes confidence of Sonsodo witnessing a turnaround by January 2024. In fact, Kamat asserted that Sonsodo will witness a turnaround by January-end, by saying not only the stink will disappear, but some concrete plan of action will be set in motion at Sonsodo for the treatment of the daily waste.
“Around 80 per cent of the problem at Sonsodo has been addressed till date. If one visits Sonsodo, the foul odour has disappeared. The waste mound inside the Sonsodo waste treatment shed is being carted out by Goa Waste Management Corporation for remediation. The entire operation will be over in a couple of months,” Kamat said.
He added: “As far as new waste treatment plant is concerned, the Goa Waste Management Corporation and other agencies are exploring various options for Sonsodo. Recently, a team was sent to Pune to study and examine waste treatment plant which had adopted the plasma gasification technology to treat waste.”
He said the agencies will zero in on the right technology suitable for Sonsodo to cater to the needs and requirements of the commercial capital.
While the GWMC has completed the remediation of the Sonsodo legacy dump, the agency has now roped in a contractor to cart out the waste piled up inside the waste management shed for remediation. Estimates prepared by the GWMC have pegged the total waste piled up inside the shed to around 8,000 metric tons.
