This spring in Davorlim village isn’t swachh in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat campaign as is evident by the tons of waste dumped in the water body.
A year ago, local MLA and Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado had managed to get government agencies to clean up the spring at Layamati-Davorlim. The ground reality, however, has not changed for the better. In the absence of any security at the spring, waste finds its way from both the village and outside. That’s not all. The spring water has come in handy for motorists to wash vehicles in violation of the rules.
A local resident Anand Sawant blamed the authorities for the sorry state of the spring. “We had all welcomed Avertano when he had cleaned up the water body last year. But, any agency comes to clear the waste from the water body, we will tell him to take up the work only after posting round the clock security at the site,” Anand told the media on Friday.
He said the spring water has been used for cultivation of vegetables and paddy, and slammed the concerned authorities for the utter neglect of the spring. “During our childhood, we used to have bath in the spring after playing on the adjoining ground. Today, the spring is contaminated with waste, plastic, glass bottles et al,” he said.
While demanding that the government pay urgent attention to the spring, Anand, however, said another round of clean up will again prove to be a futile exercise in the absence of security near the water body.
