South Goa taxi operators to join today s strike

Hundreds of tourist taxis owned by members of the South Goa Tourist Taxi Association will stop plying on Monday in response to the strike call given by the tourist taxi associations in the state.

South Goa Tourist Taxi Association Secretary, Roque Fernandes told The Goan that tourist taxi operators from South Goa, right from Arossim to Canacona, will join the strike by not plying their vehicles on Monday. He said that the tourist taxi operators will later head to Azad Maidan, Panaji in buses to attend the meeting of the tourist taxi operators in support of their charter of demands. Justifying Monday s strike, Roque said that the government s inaction against the rent-a-cab and bikes has adversely affected the business of the tourist taxi operators. He said the government cannot promote the rent-a-cab and bikes business at the cost of the tourist taxi operators who are making a living on the taxi operation. He said the tourist taxi operators have also expressed their strong objection to the installation of meters. “We are not opposed to the installation of meters, but the government should first address our concerns and meet the terms and conditions”, Roque said, while reiterating that tourist taxi operators who are members of the association will not ply their taxis on Monday.
