The Government’s decision to shut down the MPT Covid hospital has overnight enhanced the bed capacity, besides doctors and paramedics, at the South Goa district hospital.
After the government closed down the MPT Covid hospital late Thursday, an additional 63 beds have been set at the South Goa district hospital on Friday, taking the number of beds there to 568.
The strength of doctors and paramedics at the district hospital has also increased substantially, with the eight doctors and 12 nurses from the MPT hospital immediately joining duties at the district hospital from Friday.
The enhanced bed strength to a whopping 568 beds will not only facilitate the
district hospital to cater to more patients in times of emergencies but help decongest the wards.
Similarly, the addition of doctors and nurses from the MPT hospital has strengthened the manpower and helped the hospital to bridge the doctor-patient ratio to some extent.
Take note, the additional 63 beds have been added to the hospital without utilizing the top two floors of the South Goa district hospital.
The hospital nodal officer, Dr Rajesh Patil, informed that the administration was waiting for quite some time to receive additional manpower, including doctors and nurses to augment the hospital bed capacity.
“Since the government has shut down the MPT Covid hospital by transferring the 12 patients to the district hospital along with the doctors and staff, we could be able to increase the district hospital bed capacity to 568 beds,” he said.
Dr Patil added: “We were in close contact with the district administration over the question of additional beds in the district hospital. We had received the beds some time back, but these could not be set up for want of doctors and nurses. We have managed to put the extra 63 beds on the second floor without moving onto the top two floors”.
Dr Patil said what has rung in good news for the hospital administration is the extra doctors and nurses the hospital got from the MPT hospital.
“With admissions coming down in the last three days and the hospital getting additional doctors and nurses, patients will certainly get good attention from the doctors and paramedics” he said.
