20-bedded ward at GMC set up to treat black fungus cases

PANAJI

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane announced that a 20-bedded ward at Goa Medical College and Hospital will be dedicated to handle cases of mucormycosis or “black fungus”.

“In view of the cases related to black fungus we are dedicating a separate ward of 20 beds to specifically deal with cases of Covid along with black fungus. So far there are six black fungus cases detected in the State out of which one patient has expired. The authorities are anticipating that more cases are likely to be detected in the days to come. There is a separate protocol to be followed for black fungus cases and therefore they will be kept separate from regular Covid patients”, he said.

In addition to this, he said that the work has already begun on commissioning the 60-bedded paediatric ICU at GMC. “This is extendable and can be increased to a capacity of 100 beds. We are getting our infrastructure ready to deal with other complicated cases due to the new strain of Covid. We are also planning to commission a full-fledged MICU in the super-specialty block which is the need of the hour,’ he said.
