Superintendent of Police (IPS) Bosco George will replace Venancio Furtado to become the new Inspector General of Goa Prisons. The officer, currently the IRB Commandant and SP Foreigners Regional Registration Office, has also been given the additional charge of Deputy Inspector General of Police, in an order issued by the State government on Friday.
“Bosco George, IPS, Commandant IRB, shall also hold the charge of Inspector General of Prisons and shall look after the charge of the post of Deputy Inspector General of Police, in addition to his own duties until further orders,” reads the order signed by Eshant Sawant, Under Secretary (Personnel-II).
The change in guard in the Prisons Department comes two months after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the government’s decision to appoint a Superintendent of Police-level officer to take over as IG Prison. This is the first move in the change of Administrative Reforms in the Prisons Department.
“We have decided to hand over the security management of the jail to the police department. In the past, Civil Service officers were appointed as Inspector General of Prisons. Now, we will have a Superintendent of Police level officer to take over as IG Prison,” he had said, while expressing disappointment on the overall functioning of the state of the art jail .
