SANGUEM
Three girl students and a woman were injured after a speeding car knocked them down while they were awaiting a bus at the bus stop near Shivaji Circle in Curchorem on Thursday afternoon.
The incident took place after school hours when the three students were on their way back home along with a woman, when a car driven by one Adnan Shaikh from Sanguem allegedly knocked them.
The injured students Sakshi Shrinivas Patinder (13), Suvidha Suresh Tangadgi (14), Sudiksha Suresh Tangadgi (15) and Shakuntala Patindar are all residents of Gavliwada in Cacora-Curchorem.
Locals lifted the car and rescued the woman and one of the injured students.
All four injured were moved to the Upgraded Health Centre at Curchorem for treatment. While three of them were discharged from hospital, one of them presently undergoing treatment at Hospital Hospital in Margao.
Curchorem police have arrested the car driver, Adnan Shaikh, in this connection.
Meanwhile, the police came in for severe public criticism after the accident.
Locals claimed that while police are stationed at every junction in Curchorem, Quepem and Sanguem areas to fine two-wheeler and four-wheeler drivers for traffic violations, they have failed to depute any policeman on duty at important junctions in the town area which is frequented by students after school hours waiting for buses on their way back home.
A citizen, Pushkal Sawant, demanded the immediate deputation of policemen at important junctions in the town area during morning and afternoon hours for the safety of students.
