Chikungunya has raised its ugly head in a big way in some parts of the commercial capital, even as the Margao Urban Health Centre is verifying reports whether a minor city-school boy has succumbed to dengue fever two days ago.
Even as reports did the rounds that dengue fever has claimed the life of a young school boy, Margao Urban Health Officer Dr Soccoro Quadros and sanitary Inspector Eusebio Silva said the health centre is verifying the reports with the private hospital.
In fact, Silva informed that he had tried to contact a private hospital to verify the report of the young boy, but the hospital could not dish out the information given that it was a Sunday.
Even as the Health officials are verifying reports of the young boy succumbing to dengue fever, Health officials have conceded that Chikungunya has raised its ugly head in the city in a big way.
Though the Margao Urban Health authorities pointed out there’s no outbreak of Chikungunya in the city, the officials, however, have expressed concern over the number of Chikungunya cases reported in the city.
Margao Urban Health Sanitary inspector, Eusebio Silva was affected by Chikungunya during the anti-larva operations carried out in the city.
Silva pointed out that Chikungunya cases have come to light around the Malbhat-Aquem area of the city.
“When we have moved around the houses, people have informed they were down with Chikungunya for the last 15 days”, he said. Silva, however, said that there’s no outbreak of Chikungunia in the city and the disease is restricted to the Malbhat area for the moment.
“We have come across breeding sites inside the overhead tanks on residential societies and hotels. This had come to light during our regular programs in the affected areas”, he said, adding that the Urban Health centre has started fogging operations in the affected areas to keep the mosquitos at bay.
The health officials have once again made a fervent plea to the citizens under its jurisdiction to ensure there’s no water accumulation inside their houses, which if not tackled immediately, can be a perfect source for mosquito breeding.
