MARGAO
All eyes are on the convention of Scheduled Tribe leaders at Davorlim, on the outskirts of Margao, on Saturday evening, convened by the United Tribal Associations Alliance (UTAA) to decide the future course of action over the delay in implementing political reservations for the tribal communities.
Ahead of the convention, the UTAA core team met in the city on Friday to take stock of the situation and is believed to have decided to pursue legal options as well as take the battle to the ground through awareness programmes.
Sources said a group of ST leaders also called on Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, where they are believed to have reiterated their demand for the implementation of political reservations in the upcoming elections.
The UTAA convention on Saturday is expected to unveil an action plan to take the movement for political reservations to its logical conclusion.
The UTAA core committee, which met on Friday, took stock of the prevailing situation, including the High Court’s decision on the ST population, and discussed ways and means to take the movement forward.
Sources said members of the core committee favoured pursuing both legal options and reaching out to the community across the 21 Assembly constituencies to mobilise people and take the agitation to its logical conclusion. “UTAA will unveil its plan of action on Saturday after the convention. We are in the process of drafting resolutions which will guide the organisation,” sources said.
