CANACONA

It was the first day of the two-month ban on mechanised fishing, and people had to bear up with stale fish in the Canacona market.

According to sources, the fishing ban officially came into effect Tuesday midnight and many mechanized boats which ventured into the seas returned past Tuesday midnight and even early Wednesday morning with good catch, especially along the Canacona coast.

“Much of the fresh fish brought by the boats found its way to major markets in the State, while locals were offered stale fish that was left out from previous sales and kept frozen,” said resident of Agonda.

With only a few buying stale fish, many residents were however seen lined up outside chicken shops to buy fresh chicken.

A large number of fishing boats were docked during the off-season at Talpona, Saleri river front and Palolem-Patnem.
