PANAJI: The State government is shelling out a whopping Rs 1.5 crore annually towards medical treatment of current and former MLAs suffering from various ailments.
Three of these afflicted legislators - current and former - are suffering from cancer, another three have undergone bypass surgeries, while a few others are undergoing dialysis treatment.
While the medical expenses of one of the current MLA, who is undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital, is pegged at around Rs 7.5 lakh, the medical bills of three other MLAs are yet to be received. Two among these three are in a critical condition.
Among the former MLAs, the medical bills of Vishnu Wagh amounted to around Rs 50 lakh while those of a former minister holding co-operative portfolio, who underwent treatment for cancer, was pegged at Rs 25 lakh.
Some of the former legislators, which include a former Education minister, are taking dialysis treatment, although the amounts spent on bills are comparatively less. Three former MLAs have undergone bypass surgeries over the last 3-4 years with around Rs 25-30 lakh spent on each surgery. The three are former Information & Publicity and Law minister, a former tourism minister and a former home minister. Two of these former legislators have recovered from their medical condition.
It is learnt that several other former MLAs have submitted their medical bills for various ailments to the legislature. However, out of the five current legislators who are taking treatment for various ailments, only one has submitted their medical bills till date.
