In an apparent move by the State government, the Goa Public Service Commission (GPSC) could soon find a member from Maharashtra on its selection panel. The proposal is likely to come up in the Pramod Sawant-led cabinet meeting slated on Wednesday.
The Commission, currently headed by Chairman Jose Manuel Noronha has Professor Sukhaji Naik as its lone member.
Ironically, the GPSC that insists on having mandatory knowledge of Konkani during the recruitment of candidates to various gazetted posts in State departments could have a non-Konkani-speaking official on Board if the proposal gets a go-ahead.
Secretariat sources told The Goan that the government is keen on inducting an official from Maharashtra, who will serve as an additional member of the Commission.
Questions are also raised about the need for a third member despite recruitment not being conducted in large numbers like in the other bigger states.
“The Commission has always been functioning with one Chairman and member, except on one occasion when an additional member was appointed for a short period. In a small State where recruitments are not in lakhs, expanding the GPSC Board is irrelevant,” the official said.
