MARGAO
Strange this may seem, but true that the Water Resources Department (WRD) will start work of desilting the major storm water nullahs in the city at an estimated cost of Rs 18 lakh only next week.
WRD officials, however, in private blamed the Margao Municipality for sending late the proposal for the storm water nullah desilting work this year.
While the WRD will take up the work of desilting the storm water nullahs in both Margao and Fatorda at a whopping cost of Rs 18 lakh, questions are doing the rounds in certain quarters whether it is proper to take up the storm water nullah desilting when the monsoons is expected to hit the State around the same time.
On the other hand, most of the storm water nullahs in the city, including the nullah at Old market, SGPDA and others have been craving for attention. These water channels are filled with plastic waste, debris and wild vegetation and not to mention sewage water which has been conveniently discharged into these nullahs for want of a dedicated underground sewerage line in Fatorda.
A senior WRD official conceded to The Goan that the storm water nullah desilting work is delayed this year for want of a proposal from the Margao Municipal Council. In fact, the official said the proposal from the MMC came a little bit late, which was then processed by the WRD before issuing the work to two agencies, one in Margao and Fatorda.
