Stench as sewage water enters Comba nullah

Residents of Comba-Margao cried foul on Monday as raw sewage water found its way into an adjoining water nullah through a pipe connecting the underground sewer line.
As foul odour enveloped the entire locality, local residents pointed accusing fingers at the PWD officials for discharging the sewage water into the nullah. “This is the handiwork of the PWD engineers and officials. Why would the residents connect a pipe to the underground sewage line to release the water into the nullah,” former Margao municipal chairperson Savio Coutinho demanded to know.
He recalled that the PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavlikar had given benefit of doubt to the PWD engineers over the discharge of untreated sewage water into the River Sal, while saying that the discharge of the sewage water at Comba through a pipe is the handiwork of the officials.
Coutinho demanded to know whether the ongoing work of de-silting of River Sal will serve any purpose when raw sewage is being discharged at many points along the river.
Mithu Gonsalves, who works at Comba, pointed out that it’s now four days since the sewage water is being discharged into the nullah. “We cannot go to the fields or in the water. Our legs have been affected by the contaminated water,” Gonsalves said, while making an appeal to the PWD to immediately stop the discharge of the sewage water into the nullah.
