The South Goa Planning and Development Authority must have moved with alacrity to reign in on the retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market during the last two days.
The PDA and other authorities, including the Margao Municipality and the police, had to face questions from fish loving Goans over the pathetic and stinking conditions in Goa's lone wholesale fish market.
As the PDA, police and Margao Municipal Council workers made their presence felt at the wholesale fish market for the second day today, they were greeted by questions over the delay in bringing about a turnaround in the stinking market conditions.
They contended that the people visiting the wholesale market, including the fish vendors, had been only hearing empty promises from the powers that be to bring about a turnaround in the wholesale fish market, but in vain.
In fact, when The Goan team visited the wholesale fish market, the entire market was filled with stench and stink as people walked in the muck, making one wonder whether there's any agency around to look after the upkeep and maintenance.
Wholesale fish vendors questioned the PDA for ignoring the maintenance of the wholesale fish market as they are left with no option but to do the business in stench. "It may take time for the PDA to build a modern market, but let the authority at least wash the market every day and clean up the surroundings," a fish merchant told the media, adding "instead of going after the traditional fishermen, the PDA should offer a conducive environment for buyers and sellers alike".
