Both short-term and long-term measures have been suggested by the newly-elected Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar and the residents of Navelim and Telaulim to make the western bypass junction near the Furtado petrol pump accident free.
As a short-term measure, the Traffic police has been told to depute two policemen at the junction to regulate the free flow of traffic and enforce traffic rules. It has been further decided to commission the traffic signals at the junction on topmost priority to regulate the traffic flow.
A flyover or a road over bridge has been suggested by the Sarpanch of Telaulim, Estevan Goes to the MLA as part of the long-term measures at the junction.
The Navelim MLA along with officials of the PWD and police, besides the sarpanch of Navelim and Telaulim descended at the bypass junction after the local residents called him for an inspection in order to find a solution to the traffic snarls and accidents.
After a meeting with the residents and officials, the Navelim MLA said he has directed the police and the Power department to commission the traffic signals at the junction by Monday. “The traffic signals could not be commissioned for want of power supply. I have spoken to the Power official and he has assured that the traffic signal would get the power supply by Monday,” he said.
He added: “Pending commissioning of the traffic signals, I have told the traffic officials to depute two constables at the junction to regulate the traffic flow.”
The MLA has further suggested to the residents to explore the possibility of shifting the Cross from the side, saying the PWD is ready to rebuild the Cross after the shifting.
Social worker George Barreto also made a forceful demand for a flyover at the junction.
The MLA said he has asked the Telaulim panchayat to take a resolution on the flyover, promising to take up the matter with the government.
