CANACONA: At a time when mobile phones, internet and other telecommunication services have become essential to people and societies, it is difficult to imagine households still deprived in the State.
But believe it or not, about 15 houses in an isolated area of Dhaveanwaddo in Karvem-Gaondongrim village are still deprived of electricity, depriving them of several services.
Several decades after other parts of the State were electrified, the electricity department has recently floated a tender to provide power supply to 10 houses at Dhaveanwaddo, by erecting 22 poles over a distance of 4.5 kms.
Incidentally, the State government had to be woken up by Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, who raised the issue of non-electrification to Dhaveanwaddo, in the first assembly session soon after the 2017 assembly elections.
Fernandes had obtained an assurance from Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar that department would pursuing the matter and efforts would be made to electrify the locality at the earliest.
Sources in the local electricity department revealed that the electrification needs of at least 15 residential units would be met, by erecting around 22 poles over a distance of 4.5 kms at an estimated cost of about Rs 11 lakh.
“A separate transformer will also be installed for the sole usage of this locality, and all the non-electrified houses will be extended with power supply according to their needs,” Canacona Assistant Engineer Vinayak Mhalshekar told The Goan.
When contacted, Fernandes said: “It is my endeavour that no residential unit should be deprived of electricity, no matter in which part of Canacona taluka.”
“There are also a few areas still left out in Cotigao village, as these areas fall under the wildlife sanctuary. The government is being continuously reminded to complete 100% electrification of Canacona taluka, by making special provisions in law or making arrangements for non-conventional methods,” said Fernandes.
“Incidentally, when I raised the issue of the need to provide power supply Karvem in the first assembly session, Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar immediately moved the file.”
“Estimates were prepared and the tender has now been floated. We expect the work to commence fast. I want the residents of Dhaveanwaddo in Karvem, who have till date been deprived of electricity, to be provided with power connections before the monsoons,” the Canacona MLA added.
