Margao Muncipal Council on Thursday told JICA officials to stop all road-digging activity in the commercial capital by May 18.
At a meeting called by MMC chairperson Dr Babita Angle Prabhudesai on Thursday, JICA officials were told in no uncertain terms not only to stop the ongoing road-digging works by May 18, but to also restore and tar all the roads for smooth flow of vehicular traffic.
The MMC chairperson had a meeting with officials of various government agencies, including JICA, PWD sewerage, BSNL, electricity, etc, wherein they discussed and reviewed the progress of works presently underway in the city.
After the meeting, Babita told the media that the agencies have been told to cooperate and coordinate with the Margao civic body when major works are taken up for digging.
“I have told the agencies to informe the public through public notices whenever they take up road-digging to prevent chaos and ensure smooth vehicular flow in the city,” she said.
Babita said that the municipality has assured to provide municipal workers to the electricity department for cutting and trimming of trees as part of the monsoon preparedness work.
As far as JICA is concerned, she said that municipal engineers will inspect the roads taken up for digging by JICA so that they are all restored before the onset of monsoon.
“I have made it point blank clear to JICA officials that roads dug up for laying of the sewerage line will have to be restored and tarred before the onset of monsoon,” she said, adding that the municipality has appointed two nodal officials to coordinate with JICA officials to ensure that public are not put to inconveniences.
Saying that the JICA will take up digging of the Pimpalkatta road shortly, the MMC chairperson has told the traffic police to block the road for entry of four-wheelers to avoid chaos in the market area.
