In Goa, off late, tourists have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Be it their involvement in fatal accidents, causing nuisance on road, zooming around on rental bikes and cars in complete violation of the law, creating ruckus ... and the list goes on. The seemingly non-stop instances of tourists gaining attention for unruly behaviour is something to worry about.
Here we take a look at some of the recent incidents where tourists were generally found causing a nuisance.
Three incidents were
reported in December 2023
All thanks to social media that highlights the same and thus helps the law enforcement agencies to act against such violators or troublemakers.
1) A group of tourists in a rented Thar car were found engaged in stunts and dangerous manoeuvres at Calangute. One was arrested but details were not shared by the police.
2) A video of a tourist driving with two kids on the top of a car in Parra was gaining much traction on social media. Many have reacted to the video and condemned the man’s irresponsible behaviour. A few even demanded appropriate action to be taken against him. There was social media outrage and subsequently police traced and took action against them.
3) Old Goa Police had taken strict action against three tourists, for driving recklessly and posing a significant threat to the safety of others on the road.
Tourists go into
overdrive in Feb
1) The month reported several cases of tourists, driving rent-a-car, involved in several accidents including a fatal one wherein a man was thrown over Old Mandovi Bridge and plummeted into the river when the two-wheeler he was riding was hit by a rent-a-car. The driver is under arrest.
2) A video of a group of tourists riding rent-a-bikes in reckless and dangerous manner on the Atal Setu lane- on which entry of two wheelers are banned- had gone viral. A total of six rent-a-bikes were involved in the incident, wherein they entered the bridge from a wrong lane and then by over speeding tried to evade traffic cops. However, police managed to catch hold of four bikes.
3) Tourists flouting rules while riding or driving is very common along the infamous Parra road. A recent such incident had even gone viral with police failing to take any action.
4) Last week, Colva police had issued a challan to Maharashtra registered vehicle after the driver drove the car to Colva Beach via a footbridge. The vehicle was even impounded for a day.
