Balancing reservation: Equity and efficiency

The Gomantak Bhandari Samaj seeks a dedicated 20% reservation for the Bhandari community across sectors, including education and the legislative assembly, alongside the existing 27% OBC reservation. They argue for this allotment, citing the Bhandari community’s significant presence within the OBC demographic, with the remaining 7% earmarked for other groups.

While reservations have facilitated the integration of millions from disadvantaged backgrounds into society, it has also fostered heightened caste consciousness and politicisation. Some politicians exploit this for expanding reservations. However, the focus should shift towards increasing overall opportunities rather than solely relying on reservations, ensuring economic development reaches all, regardless of caste or creed.

Reservation for SC/ST upholds administrative efficiency and inclusivity, countering centuries of discrimination. Creamy layers should be excluded, and reservations extended to economically backward individuals across all groups, fostering a fairer and more democratic system. The 50% cap on reservations, mandated by the Supreme Court, strikes a balance, promoting both inclusion and merit-based competition. This encourages excellence, vital for national advancement.
