The Congress on Thursday claimed to have stopped hotmixing works of the Gulem-Balli stretch of the NH66 highway following rains in Canacona taluka.
Pre-monsoon rains have been an intermittent occurrence in the taluka since the past week, especially in the hilly areas of Karmalghat-Padi, where the hotmixing of the NH66 highway has been in progress since the past fortnight.
Despite rains in various parts of the taluka on Thursday, the hotmixing machinery and manpower reached near Balli and continued the work.
Some Congress workers led by GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari approached the hotmixing team at Balli and requested them to stop works, claiming it would be a futile exercise to hotmix the road during the rains.
The team, however, asked Bhandari to approach the PWD engineer and accordingly, Bhandari later met PWD Executive Engineer, National Highway WDXIV (NH) D S Kamat at Fatorda.
Bhandari told Kamat that the hotmixing of wet roads would be a wastage of public money, as the road would not remain in good condition.
“Kamat accepted our justification and then directed the team to immediately stop hotmixing of the Gulem-Balli stretch of the NH66 highway,” said Bhandari.
The hotmixing works which began a fortnight ago at Gulem, has reached near the KRC railway bridge at Balli.
Canacona PWD (NH) AE Rajesh Gaude, Canacona Congress Block President Prahlay Bhagat, Manesh Naik Gaonkar, Cleston Viegas, Vaishal Pagi and Canacona Youth Congress President Vaishnav Pednekar were also present during Bhandari’s meeting with Kamat.
