Stray cattle, a major nuisance at Sanguem weekly market

SANGUEM

Stray cattle have become a major nuisance at Sanguem’s weekly Wednesday market, causing inconvenience to traders and customers and prompting demands for immediate action from the Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) to control stray cattle and dogs.

The half-day market attracts a large number of people from Sanguem and neighbouring villages, with traders setting up stalls in closely packed spaces. However, stray cattle frequently wander through the market, disrupting business and damaging merchandise by feeding on goods displayed for sale. Traders have complained of financial losses and urged the civic body to ensure that cattle are kept away from the market, even if controlling their movement across the entire town is difficult.

The problem is also evident in the area below the Sanguem Deputy Collector’s Office, where stray cattle and dogs have become a nuisance. Residents have complained about foul smells caused by animal waste and urine.

The seating arrangements provided by the Municipal Council for local vegetable vendors have reportedly failed to serve their purpose, forcing women vendors from nearby villages to abandon the allotted space and sell their vegetables and fruits near a bank entrance.

Customers visiting the area have also expressed discomfort and fear due to the presence of stray dogs.

The fish market behind the Deputy Collector’s Office faces additional problems, particularly at night. Poor lighting beneath the office makes access difficult, while stray dogs often chase and bark at pedestrians, causing inconvenience and fear, especially among women.

Residents have urged the SMC to improve street lighting in dark stretches and take effective measures to control stray cattle and dogs to ensure public safety and provide a more convenient environment for traders and customers.
