Striking healthcare workers demand improved security

MARGAO
Doctors at the Hospicio South Goa district hospital on Saturday observed a one minute silence to express solidarity with the striking doctors and to demand justice for the doctor raped and murdered in Kolkata.

Senior Hospicio doctor Dr Eddie De Mello briefed the hospital doctors after observing a one minute silence. He said the doctors at the government hospital can go on strike since they are bound by conduct rules.

Dr Eddie, however, underscored the need for a mechanism to ensure enhanced security for the safety of healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses. “There’s a need to put a mechanism in place to take care of the safety and security of the healthcare workers, including doctors and nurses,” he said.

He added: “We are working in a hostile environment and also work under lot of stress. We have to put in place a mechanism that would lessen our stress.”

Saying that what has happened in Kolkata can happen anywhere, he stressed on the need to improve security at work place.

After observing a minute silence, the doctors resumed their OPD services at the government-run district hospital.
