STs group begins hunger strike for political reservation

PANAJI

The scheduled tribe (ST) leaders under the banner ‘Mission Political Reservation for Scheduled Tribes (ST)’ on Wednesday began their chain hunger strike demanding immediate notification to reserve four assembly constituencies - Sanguem, Priol, Quepem, and Nuvem for the community candidate.

The leaders, led by Rupesh Velip, held a sit-in chain hunger strike at Azad Maidan pressing for their demand. They expressed complete displeasure at the manner in which the State and Central leadership are handling the reservation issue.

The group is likely to announce its future course of action on Thursday, which may include working against the ruling BJP for the upcoming 2024 parliamentary polls. The community has around 1.80 lakh voters.

They pointed out how the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had fooled Goa delegation led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant by assuring to place the resolution on political reservation before the central cabinet during its meeting on February 28.
