MAPUSA
Amid the surging coronavirus cases and with restrictions in place, Gudi Padwa was celebrated with pomp and gaiety in Bardez.
While the celebration to a large extent was subdued in Mapusa, a big motor rally was organised by the enthusiastic participants in Calangute.
Keeping in mind the Covid restrictions, the Mapusa Nav-varsha Swagat Samiti which celebrates the traditional sarvajanik ‘Gudi Padwa’ (Hindu New Year) in town did away with the traditional procession. The 45-minute programme held at the Mapusa taxi-stand was kicked off with the hoisting of the “Gudi” by a retired teacher and journalist Narayan Ratwad, which was followed by a discourse by professor Anil Samant.
“Considering the Covid situation in the State and the country, we decided not to have the traditional procession. Also due to restrictions on gatherings, we invited only 200 people for the function,” an organiser told The Goan.
The Gudi Padwa celebration was held with full gusto in Calangute constituency with the participants taking part in a huge rally of motor vehicles.
The rally comprising four-wheelers and two-wheelers with participants armed with saffron flags wound its way through the streets of Calangute, Candolim and Arpora Nagoa.
