In a remarkable medical feat, surgeons at Daffodils Multi-Speciality Hospital, Vasco, have successfully removed a massive tumour encompassing the entire right kidney of a 74-year-old male patient. The tumour, measuring a staggering 25cm × 15cm × 10cm, was successfully excised, marking a significant victory in the patient’s battle against cancer.
The patient, who had a medical history including heart disease, stroke, high blood sugar, and hypertension, underwent thorough pre-operative evaluations, including Triple phase CT scans, CT Chest, Cardiac Function Tests, and Lung Function Tests. Following these assessments, he underwent a Right Radical Nephrectomy, led by Dr Gurpreet Gill, a Senior Specialist Uro-Oncology Surgeon, and assisted by Dr Deepak Kuvelkar, Senior Consultant Anaesthetist.
Dr Gill highlighted the aggressive nature of the Renal Cell Cancer, confirmed by biopsy as Grade IV, affecting all parts of the kidney. However, the surgery yielded promising results, with clear margins observed around the kidney vein, artery, and ureter, as well as in the lymph nodes, indicating complete removal of the tumour without any spillage during the procedure. The patient, classified as Stage mp T3aN0M0, exhibited remarkable post-operative recovery, regaining mobility within three days and being discharged on the fifth postoperative day.
Speaking on the significance of early diagnosis, Dr Gill emphasised the importance of timely investigations in middle-aged and older patients to detect the disease at an early stage. He noted that in cases of small, localised kidney tumours, minimally invasive procedures such as Partial Nephron Sparing Nephrectomy, which can be performed through Keyhole Laparoscopy, offer a viable treatment option, sparing the remaining functioning kidney and avoiding large incisions.
After two weeks, the patient demonstrated excellent progress, with a healed wound, restored appetite, and regained mobility, underscoring the success of the surgery and the patient’s resilience in overcoming the formidable challenge posed by Renal Cell Cancer.
