Dr Devagouda, noted orthopaedic surgeon and medical director of Shree Ortho and Trauma Centre (SOTC) in Belagavi, has stated that mental health of women plays a crucial role in their overall well-being in ailments such as osteoporosis, knee and back pain, chronic stress, anxiety, and depression.

He also stated that mental health issues can also have a profound impact on women’s bodies, often exacerbating existing conditions.

He was speaking at ‘Sukoon’, an interactive session on mental health organised by Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) in collaboration with SOTC on Sunday.

“Osteoporosis, a condition characterised by brittle and fragile bone, is influenced by various factors including hormonal changes, genetics, and lifestyle. However, emerging research suggests that psychological factors like chronic stress can significantly contribute to bone loss following the increase in the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone which affects bone density and formation,” Dr Devagouda said.

Calling upon women to avoid a sedentary lifestyle, he said knee and back pain are common complaints among women which only worsens with mental health issues and stressed the need to prioritise a comprehensive health approach with a focus on mental health to ensure holistic care and long-term outcomes.

Psychologist Counsellor Akash Sidel highlighted health priorities. Dr Devagouda and Akash Sidel were felicitated on the occasion.
