Sugarcane farmers across Goa have asked the government to come clear on its stand on the Sanjeevani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana within the next 8 days, failing which they have threatened to agitate.
This was decided at a meeting held by the sugarcane farmers at Dharbandora.
Though the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured the house that after a thorough study and considering the farmers’ point of view, a proper decision will be taken on the government-owned Sanjeevani Sugar Factory, the farmers expressed unhappiness over being kept in the dark.
The president of Goa Us Utpadan Saghatana, Rajendra Desai told media persons that the government should take them into confidence before taking any decision.
“The government should come clear on its stand over the Sanjeevani Sakhar Karkhana. Else we will stage a protest,” said Desai.
The farmers also stated that if operations of the karkhana are stopped, then it would affect the cultivation of sugarcane besides rendering the farmers and the workers jobless.
Goa produces around 40,000 odd tonnes of sugarcane while the rest is brought in from neighboring states to run operations at the karkhana.
