Sunday swim turns fatal: Cop drowns in Sirsaim quarry

A Sunday evening outing turned tragic for a group of friends when a police constable drowned while bathing in a quarry at Sirsaim.

The deceased, identified as Akash Suresh Naik (35), was posted at the Porvorim Police Station and had recently been transferred to Calangute.

The incident occurred around 6 pm when Naik, along with eight others, had visited the water-filled quarry “ a popular yet risky spot for locals during the monsoon season. While enjoying a swim, Naik reportedly went underwater and did not resurface.

His friends immediately raised an alarm and alerted the Mapusa Fire Station. Fire personnel rushed to the site and managed to retrieve Naik from the water. He was promptly shifted to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa, where doctors declared him brought dead.

“Preliminary reports suggest that Naik drowned while bathing in the quarry. We are conducting further inquiries to understand the full sequence of events,” said an official from the Colvale Police Station, which has registered an unnatural death case.
