Supply of fish
takes a hit

The supply of fish and other seafood was badly affected due to ongoing protests of fishermen. This particularly affected the supply of small fish.
Albertina Rodrigues, fish-seller in Panaji fish market, said, “Varieties of small fish have virtually disappeared from the market. You can’t find fish like small mackerel, sardines, silver-fish in Panaji market at all.”
Rodrigues continued, “In the absence of small varieties of fish, we are selling freshwater fish, which is found in water bodies. Such fish doesn’t fetch us good price.”
Meanwhile, another fish-seller confirmed that he was selling mostly fresh-water fish as salt-water fish was tough to find in Goa. The price of big mackerel had increased to Rs 200 per kilogram in Panaji fish market, which was 33% more than what its price was before fishermen’s protests had erupted.
