Even as Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai is determined to set up the IIT project in Cotarli-Sanguem, farmers opposing the IIT have continued to get support from various individuals and organisations in the State.
This time, the farmers have received the support from Shailendra Velingkar, President of Shree Parshuram Gomantak Sena and Prashant Gauns Dessai of the Sugarcane Cultivators Association.
In his video message, Shailendra Velingkar claimed that the government had failed to specify out with the advantages and disadvantages of the IIT project, even after the project had been opposed by people in Canacona and Melauli-Sattari.
Velingkar claimed there are vast barren lands elsewhere in the State which could be used for the project, rather than proposing to dump it on agricultural lands at Sanguem.
He added that farmers and people from Sanguem who have been opposing the project are right in their agitation, as the project is being proposed on farmlands which is set to destroy the nature and environment.
“The government should stop bulldozing the project on farmlands in Sanguem and instead, get it shifted elsewhere,” claimed Velingkar, while suggesting Betul as an alternate place.
Velingkar felt the government should think of being accommodative rather than using adversarial policies by forcing projects unwanted by the people.
“Protecting the environment is in the blood of Goans and people from Sanguem are rightly doing what is best for them and the people from Sanguem,” claimed Velingkar while extending his support to the agitation.
Prashant Gauns Dessai, a member of Sugarcane Cultivators Association, also extended his help to the anti-IIT supporters.
Gauns claimed that the government, and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai in particular, should stop insisting on the project on pristine farmlands at Sanguem.
“Instead of getting concrete projects on pristine farmlands, the government should provide these lands for agricultural plantation,” claimed Dessai.
