Olencio Simoes, General Secretary of Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE), said MPT had illegally started capital dredging to deepen the existing navigation approach channel in Vasco Bay to allow larger capsize vessels into port area and for that purpose they had proposed to deepen depth of water to 19.5-19.8 metres from the existing depth of 14.1-14.4 metres over the entire length of 18 kms of the approach channel.
"In collusion with MOEF officials, MPT managed to get an EC dated February 9, 2016, exempting public consultation in complete violation to the provisions of the EIA Notification, 2006." "This clearance was quashed and set aside by NGT judgment of September 2, 2016, which was challenged by MPT before the SC," states an e-mail release.
They demanded that Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari should explain to the people of Goa what action will they initiate against MPT chairman I Jeyakumar and the MOEF officials who had issued the impugned Environmental Clearance (EC) and caused great damage to the environment of Goa and whether the government will direct the MPT to restore the sea bed?
