Comparing the “everlasting” Taj Mahal to the “deteriorating” Kala Academy building, Art and Culture Minister, Govind Gaude suggested that the iconic symbol of love in Agra has survived for centuries only because its works were not tendered.
Gaude, on Wednesday, also maintained that the design of Kala Academy structure was faulty and therefore the building faced various issues.
“Constructed from 1632 to 1653, Taj Mahal is still beautiful till today. Why? It is because Shah Jahan never invited quotations. That is why the Taj Mahal has lasted for so many years,” Gaude said, while trying to fend off some pointed queries on Kala Academy renovation works posed by Fatorda MLA, Vijai Sardesai.
The iconic monument of Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz after her death.
Hitting back at the minister, the Fatorda MLA said giving Taj Mahal stories will not work in this age, as the renovation works involved huge amounts of public money.
“Don’t give us Taj Mahal stories. This is a modern age. There should be transparency. Since it’s public money there should be accountability,” Sardesai thundered, on the floor of the House.
He also asked the chief minister to stop payment to the company and to hold an inquiry on the issue.
“If everything is ok, I will say sorry,” he said.
According to Gaude, the government had to take the renovation of Kala Academy because of its deteriorating condition.
He said during every monsoon water sips inside the building and some seven to eight rows go under water while the ‘Black Box’ would virtually turn into a pond.
“During every monsoon water enters inside the building. If this is not a faulty design then what is it,” he said.
He also stressed that he had high regards for the renowned architect Charles Correia but he had a problem with the Charles Correia Foundation who were rigid in their stand.
