Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Thursday appealed to the youth to take up farming activities and assured to get a dedicated Zonal Agriculture Office (ZAO) for Mormugao taluka.
Vas was speaking to reporters alongside a function to launch a machine to desilt the Khazan land for the benefit of farmers in Sancoale.
"This is a long-pending demand from farmers and tenants of the Ille Bhaile Khazan Tenant Association (IBKTA) and we have finally taken up the work to de-silt the Khazan at a cost of Rs 20 lakh through the WRD,” said Vas.
“Farmers faced a lot of difficulties as farmlands have not been de-silted for many years. Once the area is de-silted, farmers will get more land for cultivation and this will help them with a good produce," said Vas.
"I appeal to youth to take up farming activity as it is a good source of income, creates self-employment and also makes the State self-sustainable at the same time. I assure the youth of all help for their farming activity and they can also avail of various government schemes," said Vas.
The MLA said there has also been a long-pending demand for a dedicated ZAO for Mormugao taluka.
“In the absence of a dedicated ZAO for Mormugao taluka, farmers have to travel all the way to Margao for all approvals or schemes or issues. I will take this ZAO issue with the government and with the minister concerned and try to get a dedicated ZAO for Mormugao taluka on top priority," said Vas.
IBKTA President Nalesh Naik said the Khazan land had become non-cultivable ever since Konkan Railways came and took up piling works in the area.
“This led to in silt in the farms and government authorities also neglected this issue for a long time. When I became IBKTA president in 2018, we took up the matter with the former Cortalim MLA, but the issue was not resolved amid elections and code of conduct.”
“We finally met newly elected Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and he immediately took it up with the WRD and agriculture minister and got approvals in quick time. Now that we have finally got the Khazan land de-silted, I appeal to all farmers to start using this land for cultivation without any more excuses," said Naik.
