“The Peddem junction, near the sports complex experiences chaos and a lot of accidents have taken place here. On the request of the local councillor, Marlene D’Souza and the local residents, I had a meeting with the national highway engineers and the traffic police to find a solution to the problem,” Ticlo said.
He said as a temporary relief, the PWD will erect some rumblers at key points along the highway so that vehicles will slow down near the junction.
“Although work has been tendered to widen the NH17 into a six lane, as a temporary relief PWD will erect rumblers at three places on the highway close to the junction,” the Aldona MLA said.
He said there were requests from locals to install traffic lights in the area, but the department has turned down the demand since work of widening of the NH17 will start shortly.
Ticlo instructed the traffic police not to challan motorists at junctions, particularly at the Bastora junction, as the presence of the traffic police could lead to mishaps in the area.
“Youngsters riding motorbikes tend to zoom to avoid the traffic police and this may lead to serious accidents. I therefore requested the police to avoid issuing challans at the junctions,” he said.
He further said he has requested Traffic PI Tushar Vernekar to depute more staff at the Bastora junction especially during peak hours.
He said work on the Bastora underpass was going on at a fast pace and expected the project to be completed in another six to eight months.
