Leader of the Margao Gandhi Market Vegetable and Ready-made Garment Vendors Association, Manohar Ajgaonkar, on Monday issued a diktat that tambdi bhaji (red amaranth) from the neighbouring State of Karnataka will never be permitted for sale in the Gandhi Market.
Addressing the annual programme of the association to mark New Year celebrations, Ajgaonkar urged the vendors to stay united in view of attempts made in certain quarters to divide market vendors. He reiterated that tambdi bhaji from Karnataka will never find its way into the Gandhi Market. “The Gandhi Market is meant for Goan farmers who produce local varieties of vegetables and bring them for sale in the market. Since tambdi bhaji is produced by local farmers, there will be no place for tambdi bhaji from Karnataka in the Gandhi Market,” he said, while at the market programme on Monday.
The former deputy chief minister recalled "the sacrifices" made by the vendors to protect the market. “This market belongs to the vendors. The vendors should do business in the dedicated shed meant for local Goan vendors,” he added.
