Tata Motors became the only private company to showcase light armoured combat platform at the ongoing DefExpo 2016.
This is a great leap forward for the company, which started its journey in defence sector by selling logistic vehicles to the Indian military.
Vernon Noronha, defence business head, Tata Motors, said, “We have jointly developed ‘Kestrel’ with Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).”
Kestrel is India’s first indigenous wheeled infantry combat vehicle, which can be used on several terrains for many applications as it is scaleable and upgradable.
In addition to this, Tata Motors also got orders from Indian Army for supplying an additional 619 units of its high-mobility (HMV) 6X6 multi-axle truck.
To give an idea of its indigenisation in the context of ‘Make in India', Noronha said, “Only three components for this vehicle were imported from outside. And, very soon, we are going to make even these components in India.”
