Taximen’s protest scuttled, but they shift ground

PANAJI
The North District Collector revoked the permission of taxi operators to hold protest at Azad Maidan in Panaji citing the surge in Covid cases. Police were deployed at the maidan to restrain then from entering the maidan.

After the police force restricted their entry inside the maidan, the agitating taxi operators, who came along with their family members in large numbers, decided to go back and continue with their protest at their respective taxi stands.

They have also resolved to keep their vehicles off the road till their demand to scrap GoaMiles is fulfilled.

The leaders of the taxi owners’ association have appealed to their members not to take the law in their hands and let the agitation go on peacefully.

The taxi operators have criticised the government’s decision of denying them the right to protest and questioned it for selectively applying Covid restrictions on their gathering.

“The social functions, birthdays, tourists parties are going in full swing and government is allowing entry of a large number of tourists to casinos,” said a taxi operator.

The government has said that its willing to talk to the protesters if they withdraw their strike. However, the operators are admanat on their demand to scrap the GoaMiles cab aggregator.
