Relatives, friends and villagers bid adieu to young John Dias, who was shot dead at Houston, Texas, USA last month, as his mortal remains were laid to rest at Chandor on Saturday evening.
John’s mortal remains arrived in the wee hours of Saturday at the Dabolim airport. The funeral cortege was led by young football players from the Igorje ward at Chandor, where John resided with his mother Inacinha. Attired in the jerseys sponsored by John after he started working in the USA, the football players paid their tributes to the departed soul, as they recalled that the jerseys they are wearing were sponsored by John as they played for a local club at Chandor.
“This is our tribute to John, who used to play with us for our ward club and having played for Chandor and Guirdolim football clubs. He had promised to sponsor the jerseys after he starts working abroad. We are sporting these jerseys as a tribute to him,” remarked a local football player.
A stream of visitors descended at the residence after news spread that the mortal remains have reached home on early Saturday and to offer condolences to his bereaved mother.
Newly-appointed GPCC chief Amit Patkar along with the new South Goa district Congress chief Savio D’Silva visited the residence and paid their last respects and offered their condolences to the mother.
The youngster from Chandor, who had played as a goalkeeper for the Chandor and Guirdolim Sports Club in the past, was shot dead on March 18 on the store counter where he was working at Houston, Texas, USA.
