Power Minister Nilesh Cabral on Friday said economic development of Goa has been hit hard with the ban on iron ore mining in the State following the ban imposed by the Supreme Court of India last year.

“I am the Law Minister, Power minister and Environment Minister. But the irony is that the economic activity and law I don’t think are going hand-in-hand,” Cabral said while addressing a national conclave of mining engineers at a city hotel here.

Cabral was delivering his address at the inaugural function of the 31st National Convention of Mining Engineers organised by the Institution of Engineers at a city hotel. The convention is being hosted by the Goa Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) and under the aegis of the Mining Engineers division.

He said because of technical glitches, the government is unable to restart mining, adding that he has always been vocal on issues related to mining in Goa.

“Engineers are good at ‘jugad’. We have to adapt to things. Restarting mining and sustainable mining are two different points. We can find a lot of activism happening in Goa both in positive and negative way. But I always tell my activist friends that they should also see the economic growth of our country,” Cabral said.
