The importance of dialogue with political leaders, a focus on youth and the need to protect the interest of the tribals, the poor and the marginalised were emphasised at a key meet at the Pilar Theological College.

Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai presided over the Theological Consultation, while Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi, Archbishop Thomas Macwan of Gandhinagar, Archbishop Felix Toppo of Ranchi, Bishop Lawrence Pius of Dharampuri and Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas of Ranchi were the resource persons. As many as 175 Pilar Priests, Pilar Sisters and Scholastics of the Pilar Theological College participated in the day-long event.

The consultation, which is in response to the invitation of Pope Francis to observe an Extraordinary Missionary Month during October 2019, deliberated on the theme, ‘Giving Joy and Hope - Opportunities in Challenges of Today’.

Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas of Ranchi, a Goan prelate from the Pilar Society, highlighted the importance of dialogue with political leaders and shared principles, which would lead to a good and constructively critical contribution for the good of the people.

Bishop Lawrence Pius of Dharampuri focussed on the youth, especially on various issues arising from social media and its influence on youth. Understanding the youth perspective is important in order to guide them, he said.

Archbishop Felix Toppo of Ranchi, with his experience of working in the Chota Nagpur belt, highlighted the need to protect the interest of the tribals and their land while developing the rich mineral resources of the state.

Archbishop Thomas Macwan of Gandhinagar appreciated the Pilar Fathers for their missionary spirit and simplicity. He called upon people to always immerse in the culture of the place, especially the language of the place.

Another Goan prelate, Archbishop Anil Couto of Delhi, spoke on issues of the poor and marginalised, while also stressing on integral human development.

Entering into cultures and transforming the evil, unjust structures is the challenge before us and requires prophetic courage, he said.

Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Mumbai appreciated the Society of Pilar for its dynamic service and selfless commitment. He spoke about contributing to everything and collaborating with everyone involved in transforming society into a just and equitable society.   While delivering his key note address, Superior General of the Society of Pilar Fr Seby Mascarenhas, elaborated the aim of the consultation as defining a path for the Society of Pilar towards contributing towards a good and compassionate society. He said all challenges are opportunities as God gives hope in all. The consultation was moderated by Fr Alarico Carvalho.
